Debt collectors’ conduct is governed by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). They are not allowed to take any actions against you that are deceptive, fraudulent, or designed to harass or intimate you.  This includes threatening phone calls, calls at unreasonable times, calls to your employer or relatives (other than to find where you live). You can instruct the collector to stop contacting you by giving them written notification to cease. If debt collectors breach the law, you may recover both actual and statuory damages and attorneys fees.
